Biography
Maikki Toivanen is a visual artist living in Meanjin/Brisbane, who sometimes goes bushwalking, sketches a lot, enjoys travel, walking on the coast on gloomy overcast days, and making art. And some other things too.
In 2015 she gained a Bachelor of Fine Art from QCA, Griffith Uni (double major in Painting and Print Media), and is a founding member of See Saw Collective.
Nature and the built environment are her inspiration, however, her art practice is shifting towards alignment with nature. An interest and curiosity in ceramics led her to TAFE QLD South Bank Campus in 2022 to study ceramics where she was won over by the texture and feel of clay, and how it can be manipulated.
Toivanen uses both imagination and memory to guide the final detailing to produce objects that evoke the concept of nature and the desire to touch. She is currently completing her Bachelor of Arts and Design (Honours) through University of Canberra with ceramic sculpture and its relationship to the haptic perception as the key elements of her research and studio practice.
